D-Mannose is the mannose which is formed from D-glucose by a process known as Lobry-de Bruyn-van Ekenstein transformation. It is a sugar monomer belonging to aldohexose series of carbohydrates. It has the chemical formula C6H12O6, and its Mol. Mass is 180.156 g mol-1. It can also be identified by CAS number 31103-86-3. D-Mannose is used in medicine as a naturopathic remedy for urinary tract infections. Research shows that it disrupts the adherence of bacteria in the urinary tract, thus preventing urinary tract infections. D-Mannose is normally not well metabolized in humans; therefore, it does not significantly enter the carbohydrate metabolism.
